Sakai is a virtual community and we often meet online through email, and in real time through the Apereo Slack channel and web conferences. We have so many meetings that we need a Sakai calendar to keep track of our meetings. (Blog post image is from SakaiCamp 2017 in Orlando, FL).
But sometimes, meeting online is just not good enough! We need to get together in person to generate ideas, develop plans, and accelerate the rate of improvement in the product, and strengthen the connection of relationships in our community. Recently a small group of us met at Marist College and we kicked off the Sakai 12.0 QA (quality assurance) planning on Thursday, August 10. It was a small group, less than 20 in all (including intrepid Marist student workers), but it was effective and boosted us on our way to creating a QA Test Strategy (which we are fleshing out, as I write).
Upcoming opportunities to collaborate in person include:
- SakaiCamp - our annual working meeting, for both tech and non-tech folks to update the Sakai roadmap and kick butt (metaphorically speaking). Orlando, Florida, January 21 - 25, 2018.
- SakaiCamp Lite - A few Sakaigers (our nickname for Sakai community members) are planning to go to the robust All Things Open conference in Raleigh, North Carolina. We are taking an extra day onto the event and meeting at Duke University on Wednesday, October 25, 2017. This will be a smaller gathering than SakaiCamp, and shorter, but we always have a great time when we get together.
- Sakai VC - the Sakai Virtual Conference is scheduled for November 14, 2017. It is the Sakai community's most pedagogically focused event and it is completely online. This makes it much easier for folks to attend, which explains our registration numbers, which have been about 400 each year!
- ELI - Educause Learning Initiative - This is a smaller conference than the popular Educause Annual Conference, and is considered by many a premier teaching and learning event. A number of our community members are attending, so we may, or may not, organize a get together depending on how things work out. Keep your fingers crossed. We have a great panel discussion that the Apereo community submitted for consideration. New Orleans, LA, January 29 - 31, 2018.
All of our events are 100% open, by higher ed, for higher ed. (neither All Things Open nor ELI are our events of course, just related to teaching, learning and open source).
